What is ROBIN?
ROBIN, an acronym for Recreation in Old Bridge for those In Need, is a community based, year-round Therapeutic Recreation Program. It is run by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Social Services, serving individuals with disabilities from Old Bridge and surrounding towns from ages three through adult. Begun in the late 1970's as a result of legislation mandating equal services for the disabled, the program today has grown into a comprehensive system, offering both therapeutic and recreation activities. The goal of year-round programming is to provide a basic introduction to recreation opportunities and life skills development. Our very special Claire Anne Young Memorial Music Room is set to open in the Camp ROBIN Activity Center in Spring 2012, giving our participants a chance to perform in a chorus and put on shows!
What kinds of programs are available?
Therapeutic Ice Program
The goal is skill development as well as increased self confidence and esteem through mastery in sport. Participants are evaluated by qualified ice skating professionals and work either one-to-one or in small groups on ice skating skills. The success of this program can be seen in the accomplishments of the growing number of competitors in the New Jersey Special Olympics.
Saturday Morning Program
This program for ages three-adult includes sport skill development (such as ice skating), arts and crafts, active and passive recreational activities, special events and parties. Participants are placed in teams according to age and ability. The ratio of staff to participants ranges from one-to-two, through one-to-four. One-to-one staff ratio is considered for those needing individual attention.
Adult Program
This program has been expanded to provide opportunities to participate in some of the township's most popular recreation programs such as fitness, cooking, ice skating, computer classes and the ever-popular Friday Night Fun Program.
Teen Program
This program meets every other Friday during the school year.
Summer ROBIN Day Camp Program
This program, for children ages three through twenty-one, operates five days a week. Although the focus is on fun, it is hoped that the children will maintain and expand the mental, physical and social/emotional skills acquired during the school year. Children are transported to this program by the Board of Education, and wheelchair and other special needs can usually be accommodated. Following an initial assessment, children at risk are conditionally accepted and every effort is made to see that their needs are met. Team supervisors and leaders work with parents to develop programs geared towards the children's needs, interests and development. Trips are an integral part of Camp ROBIN. Fun are safety are always priorities!
Note
A current IEP is needed for first-time participants.
